Globetrotters win first-ever game on ice

NEW YORK -- The Harlem Globetrotters have a new way to beat the Washington Generals -- on ice.

The famed basketball barnstormers played on a hockey rink for the first time in their 84-year history Tuesday, putting on a show in New York's Central Park ahead of a tour of the area.

Both teams wore ice cleats on their shoes but the Globetrotters' mascot appeared unable to find ones that fit his cartoonish sneakers and wound up adding some unintentional slapstick to the routine.

The Globetrotters' Kris "Hi-Lite" Bruton put on an old-school goalie mask and used a hockey stick to bat down a shot. The Generals grimly stuck to their usual brand of basketball -- and lost 32-15.

Funeral Mass celebrated for son of Maple Leaf GM Burke

CANTON, Mass. (AP) -- Brendan Burke, the son of Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke and an advocate for gay rights, has been remembered at a funeral Mass.

The Mass at St. John The Evangelist Catholic church in Canton, Mass., on Tuesday came four days after Burke died in a car accident on a snowy Indiana road.

The funeral was attended by Maple Leafs players and staff, as well as players and coaches of the Miami University of Ohio hockey team, where the 21-year-old Burke was the team's student manager.

Burial was private.

Burke lived in Canton and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School. He was in the news last year when ESPN.com ran a story about his decision to tell his father he was gay. Brian Burke, a former hockey player at Providence College, said it didn't change how he thought of his son.

Louisiana native Glen Davis talks Super Bowl

-- Nobody was happier on the Celtics roster that the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl than Glen Davis, who was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In fact, Davis even enjoyed his college days at Louisiana State University.

"The Saints did a great job of getting the job done," Davis said. "Me being from Louisiana, being a fan, going through all the ups and downs with the Saints, for them to pull through and win a Super Bowl is huge, not only for the team, but for the state in general."

Davis said he watched the Super Bowl at Ray Allen's house with his fiancé and a few friends. He said he can't wait to return home to celebrate with his fellow Louisianans.

"I'll be down there tomorrow to celebrate a little bit more then I'll play a game and celebrate a little bit more," Davis said. "I'm going to stay over the break and celebrate some more. The party hasn't stopped."

The Celtics will leave Tuesday morning for their Wednesday game against New Orleans.

"Right when we get down there the parade starts," Davis said. "Hopefully I will get to be a part of that too."

Rajon Rondo also hopes to be a part of the celebration.

"I'll probably be at the parade myself," Rondo said. "I look forward to going down there. I know a couple guys on the team, we'll see."

Davis said that there is no way to express to someone who is not from Louisiana what the Saints Super Bowl victory means to the people there.

"You have to be from there or you have to have a loved one that has lost something...to really understand what the Saints did and what they accomplished."

"[Hurricane Katrina] was a tragic event," Davis added. "People are still trying to recover to this days so for the Saints to do something like that and to accomplish something like that, it brightens up their day, their year, in a good way. What they accomplished has touched people's hearts."

Davis, who has had some maturity issues since being drafted by Seattle 35th overall in 2007 and then immediately traded to the Celtics along with Allen for Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak and the rights to the fifth overall pick in 2007, Jeff Green, said that won't go overboard partying with his friends and family.

"I'll be ready to play," Davis said. "Basketball comes first but I'll enjoy being at home with my family and then getting to work."

Davis said that he will remain in New Orleans during All-Star break.

This year has been difficult for Davis. He missed Boston's first 27 games with a broken right thumb that he injured while fighting a childhood friend, and since he's been back, he hasn't been getting the same minutes he got in the second half of the year last year.

"Physically I feel like I'm ready," Davis said. "It was all mental coming back and really having to portray a different role. It kind of took away my aggressiveness, taking another role but me understanding what my role is now [helps]."

Davis said that he is going to be more aggressive in games from now on when he gets into the game.

"I just try to do my job and also do what I know I can do," Davis said.

Davis is averaging 5.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game this year.

Rondo will compete in HORSE competition during All-Star Weekend

Rajon Rondo confirmed Monday that he will participate in the HORSE competition during NBA All-Star weekend in Dallas.

Rondo will be joined by defending champion Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Sacramento's Omri Cassipi.

Rondo said that he is anxious to experience both the All-Star Game itslef, and the HORSE competition. He said that he doesn't know what to expect when he gets there.

Rondo played for the Sophomore Team in the Freshman vs. Sophomore game during All-Star Weekend in 2008, but says that being an All-Star is a completely different beast.

"It was definitely an honor to be a Sophomore and considered one of the top sophomores," Rondo said. "It is a whole different stage being an All-Star."

Because he just found out on Sunday that he was going to participate in the HORSE event, he has not practiced any trick shots yet, but said that he will come up with some trick shots to try to dethrone Durant.

"I got a couple shots nobody can hit. It's just a matter of if I can hit them," Rondo said.

The rules for H.O.R.S.E. are as follows:

Once a shot is made, the next player in the predetermined order will attempt the same shot. If that player misses, he is assigned a letter (ex. H for the first miss, O for the second, etc.).

The player following the miss can then pick a new shot with which to challenge his competitors. There is no dunking allowed and players will have 24 seconds each to create and mimic shots.

Players remain in the game until they have missed five shots following made baskets, thus spelling the word H-O-R-S-E. An NBA referee will be assigned to authenticate the new shots (that the player executed what he announced) and any mimic shot.

Pierce "questionable" for Celtics next game

-- Boston coach Doc Rivers said after practice today that Boston's leading scorer, Paul Pierce, is "questionable" for Wednesday's game in New Orleans.

"Paul didn't do a lot today," Rivers said. "We actually pulled him out of practice early. He was practicing and wasn't moving very well so I just took him out. He's questionable. I think he's going to play but right now we'll wait and see."

Pierce scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in just over 30 minutes in Boston's 96-89 loss to Orlando on Sunday. He missed two games after spraining his left foot last Monday against Washington.

"My foot was a little bit sore but I don't think it really affected too much of my movement," Pierce said after the game. "It's sore on the top part of my foot so as far as my lateral movement, it really didn't bother me. I felt fine out there."

The Celtics will travel to New Orleans on Tuesday morning to avoid the Saints Super Bowl celebration parade.

Super Bowl is most watched TV show ever

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Super Bowl was watched by more than 106 million people, surpassing the 1983 finale of "M-A-S-H" to become the most-watched program in television history.

The Nielsen Co. estimated Monday that 106.5 million people watched the New Orleans Saints upset the Indianapolis Colts. That beats the "M-A-S-H" finale, which had 105.97 million viewers in an era when there were fewer television sets.

Compelling story lines involving the city of New Orleans and its recovery from Hurricane Katrina and the quest for a second Super Bowl ring for Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning propelled the viewership.

The game also obliterated the previous record viewership for a Super Bowl -- last year's game between Arizona and Pittsburgh in which 98.7 million people watched.

Magic rally to beat Celtics, 96-89

-- As much as the Boston Celtics wanted to beat the defending Eastern Conference champion Orlando Magic in Sunday afternoon's Super Bowl matinee, there were several other goals that they were also trying to achieve along the way.

And as far as Boston coach Doc Rivers was concerned, if they lost the game because of the things they were trying to achieve will make the team better in the long run, he could live with that.

For a long time, Rivers' experiment - getting both Paul Pierce (sore left foot) and Marquis Daniels (thumb surgery) re-acclimated on the court with their teammates instead of playing healthier players - looked like it was going to work.

The Celtics were up 57-47, with just under nine minutes to go in the third quarter. But everything fell apart for the Celtics after that and Orlando snapped Boston's three-game winning streak with a convincing 96-89 come-from-behind triumph over Boston.

Orlando won the season series, 3-1, with the victory, and the Celtics have now lost the season series to Atlanta, which swept Boston, and Orlando.

Orlando (34-17) also moved ahead of Boston (32-17) by a few percentage points in the Eastern Conference standings with the win.

Vince Carter (20 points), Dwight Howard (16 points, 13 rebounds) and Rashard Lewis (14 points) led the Magic, who had all five of their starters reach double-figures in scoring.

Rajon Rondo (17 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds) nearly had a triple-double, and Ray Allen finished with 14 points. Pierce, in his first game back since missing two with a sprained left foot, recorded 13 points and 4 rebounds.

The Celtics were held to zero field goals over the final 7:15 of the third quarter. The Magic outscored the Celtics, 36-11, in the momentum-swinging third quarter.

Celtics-Magic in-game update: Celtics fall apart in the third

The Celtics are in the midst of arguably their worst stretch of the season, and Orlando has taken full advantage.

Orlando closed out the third quarter with 29-5 run to take a 76-62 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Celtics were booed off the court when the quarter ended. They went the final 7:16 of the quarter with zero field goals, going 0-for-9.

The Celtics will need to turn things around quickly if they want to win this one.

Vince Carter (20 points), and Jameer Nelson (13 points) are Orlando's top scorers.

Rajon Rondo (14 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds) and Ray Allen (11 points) have done their best to try to keep Boston in the game.

Pierce and Allen were shutout in the third quarter. The Magic outscored the Celtics, 36-11 in the momentum-swinging third.
