Isner reaches Hall of Fame tennis quarterfinals

NEWPORT -- Top-seeded John Isner of Tampa, Fla., advanced to the quarterfinals of the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships Wednesday with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Arnaud Clement of France.

Isner, ranked No. 46 on the ATP World Tour, had lost in the first round in his previous two visits to the Newport Casino. He will play Alex Bogomolov, Jr., in the quarterfinals. Bogomolov defeated Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round Wednesday.

Also advancing were Olivier Rochus of Belgium, a 6-4, 7-6 (3) winner over Nicolas Mahut of France; Matthew Ebden of Australia, who beat Matthias Bachinger of Germany, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France, who beat qualifier Jjmmy Wang of Taipei, 7-5, 6-4; and Michael Yani of Durham, N.C., who was leading Tommy Haas of Germany, 5-2 in the first set, when Haas retired.

Donald Young of Atlanta and eighth-seeded Tobias Ramke of Germany are on the stadium court now. The score is 2-2 in the first set.
