dalton_0526.jpgSOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- A University of Rhode Island football player was removed from the team Wednesday after he was arrested Tuesday night in what police said was an armed robbery of a suspected drug dealer, also a URI student, police and university officials said.

Jordan D. Dalton (No. 16 in photo), 20, a student from Willingboro, N.J., who was on the football team in his freshman and sophomore years, faces felony armed robbery and conspiracy charges with another 20-year-old from Willingboro, who is not a URI student.

The person they are charged with robbing -- by hitting him with a replica pistol that looks and feels like a handgun but fires 9mm blanks for the noise -- is another URI student, Eric P. O'Rourke, 19. O'Rourke was charged with felony possession and delivery of marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms, South Kingstown Police Capt. Jeffrey Allen said Wednesday.

Three incidents on Route 138 Tuesday night led to the arrests.
