Denver without Carmelo in the lineup tonight??? This game had Apollo Creed vs Ivan Drago written all over it. Could have sworn I heard James Brown singing Living in America instead of the National Anthem, but whatever, here we go. Carmelo sat due to swelling in his knee.
From the start the Celtics were dominant making their first 7, shots leaving the Nuggets to ask what the number of the Mack truck that just hit them. Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett scored Boston's first 11 points between them. KG missed the first Celtics shot with 8:03 left in the first quarter. Before the Nuggets knew it they had allowed Boston to shoot just an inch away from 70 percent in the first quarter, staring down the barrel of a 30-11 deficit before they started to make a run at them.
The Nuggets clawed their way back, although with very limited help from Chauncey Billups. The all-star guard had a very off night tonight being held to 5 points on only 2-10 shooting. George Karl went with young gun Ty Lawson who got to the lane at will scoring a team high 24 points on 9-14 shooting. He gave Rondo fits as he time and time again scored on drives and aggressive plays. JR Smith also played well scoring 16 on the night kept his team in the game with a series of long jumpers and aggressive plays. The Nuggets clawed back at halftime cutting the Celtics edge to 59-52. That's as close as they could manage the rest of the game.
Glen Davis gave put on another great performance for the home team tonight as he scored 16 points and grabbing 6 rebounds, he also managed to get to the free throw line 12 times making 8. The Celtics showed great energy and moved the ball. The Nuggets really didn't have an answer for Boston at all. After closing the first half with a strong effort, Denver looked like a depleted team in the second half just settling for long jumpers. The three point shot did them in as they shot 6 for 19 from three point for the game but only 1 for 6 in the second half. The Celtics forced 18 Denver turnovers. They had no answer for the Boston's size, Ray Allen's shooting, or the Celtics energy. Kevin Garnett added 17 points and 9 boards for the home team and Rajon Rondo still dealing with the sore hamstring added 13 assists.
In the end the Celtics dominated the Nuggets 105-89 to earn their 8th straight victory in Boston tonight. The Celtics travel to Philadelphia to take on the Sixers tomorrow night at 8PM EST.
Even though his team got blown out, George Karl has some things to be happy about. Ty Lawson is a young piece that is getting better by the game and he's finally getting good production from JR Smith. If he can ever get Kenyon Martin healthy they can still be a tough out in the playoffs come May.
