Shooting guard Delonte West has signed a free-agent contract with the Celtics, the team has confirmed.
West was the Celtics' first-round draft pick, 24th overall, in the 2004 draft. He played three seasons in Boston before going to Seattle in the Ray Allen trade. After less than one season with the Sonics, he was dealt to Cleveland, where he joined LeBron James in three failed quests to reach the NBA Finals. In the offseason, Cleveland traded West to Minnesota, which waived him.
Earlier this summer, West pleaded guilty to traffic and weapons charges stemming from a September 2009 traffic stop in Upper Marlboro, Md. The police said West was speeding on a motorcycle while carrying two loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun in a guitar case. He faces a 10-game NBA suspension at the start of the season. He received a sentence of home confinement (with flexibility to travel to road games) as well as community service and psychological counseling.
West starred alongside Jameer Nelson on the Saint Joseph's team that tore through the Atlantic 10 in 2004 and advanced to the Elite Eight.
