| The Celtics could not reach a deal with Rondo yesterday »
The news is not good for the Celtics, on two fronts, as they prepare to begin their season Tuesday night in Cleveland. The Celts have lost forward Glen "Big Baby'' Davis, likely for an extended time, because of a broken thumb. Also, guard Rajon Rondo has rejected the team's contract offer and likely will become a free agent at the end of this season, according to multiple reports. Davis injured his thumb in what is being described as an altercation with a former teammate who was visiting him. The injury is serious enough that it likely will require surgery. Davis did not practice Monday and is not with the Celtics in Cleveland. "It looks like he's going to be out for a while,'' Ainge added. The Rondo issue involves the long term. The guard's agent, Bill Duffy, told Yahoo! Sports that he and the Celtics remain far apart in negotiations for a contract extension. Duffy has set Friday as the deadline to reach an agreement. "We're not going to do an extension right now," Duffy told Yahoo! Sports. "The conversation has been cordial. We've been talking the last couple of weeks. There is a difference between the perception of him in their eyes and our eyes. With that being said, the focus is on Rajon to have a fantastic season and concentrate on winning a championship." Duffy is looking for a deal that would make Rondo one of the NBA's top five highest-paid point guards. The Celtics "feel differently," Duffy told Yahoo! Sports. An unnamed source told Boston sports radio station WEEI that the Celtics offered Rondo a five-year, $45-million extension (an average of $9 million per year), but Rondo is seeking a five-year deal worth between $55 million and $60 million (an average of $11 million to $12 million per year). Also, the Celts will be missing Tony Allen (ankle surgery), Brian Scalabrine (ankle sprain), and Bill Walker (knee surgery) when they take on the Cavs tonight. |
