NORTON, Mass. _ Steve Stricker made five birdies in a row in the middle of his round on the way to shooting a 63 Friday to take the early first-round lead in the PGA Tour's Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC of Boston. With sunny, windless weather and excellent course conditions, scoring was very low. Stricker, ranked second behind only Tiger Woods in the FedExCup playoff standings, led the charge under par as he had eight birdies and no bogeys. He had birdies on his ninth through 13th holes (He started on the back nine). Scott Verplank, Masters champion Angel Cabrera, Justin Leonard and Matt Kuchar all posted 65s. When last seen in this area, Kuchar was making 11 birdies in the final round of the CVS/Caremark Charity Classic in June at Rhode Island Country Club. Tiger Woods finished at 1-under 70, a day in which he had three birdies and two bogeys. Barrington's Brett Quigley also had 70 thanks to a great finish. He eagled the par-5 18th, hitting his second shot, from 222 yards, within 13 feet and making the putt. Defending champion Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Jim Furyk are among the late starters just beginning their rounds now. |
