Rhode Island is in a tie for second place, behind only Pennsylvania, through two days in the United States Golf Association's men's State Team Championship at the CC of St. Albans in St Louis.

Charlie Blanchard had a 69 and Bobby Leopold a 71 Thursday for a second-round total of 2-under 140. In the opening round Wednesday, Leopold has a 70 and Brad Valois a 71 for 141. Each team has three players, with the top two scores determining the team total.

Rhode Island's 3-under total of 281 gives the Ocean State a tie with Illinois in the 50-team competition. Pennsylvania, with a team of Mike Van Sickle, Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith, leads at 277.

Massachusetts, with a team of John Hadges, Brian Higgins and Frank Vana, is tied for seventh at 284. The final round will be played Friday.

The individual leader is Mark Anderson of South Carolina at 136 on rounds of 65-71. Leopold, with his 141, is in a tie for seventh.
