Rhode Island turned in easily its highest finish ever in the United States Golf Association's State Team Championship Friday, finishing fourth among the 50 teams. Rhode Island had never been in the top 10 in the seven previous times the event has been held. Rhode Island received a 71 from State Amateur champion Bobby Leopold and a 72 from two-time State champion Brad Valois in Friday's final round at the Country Club of St. Albans in St. Louis. That gave the Ocean State a team total of 2-under 424 for the 54-hole event in which each state is represented by three players, with the top two scores determining the champion. Kansas was second at 420 and Illinois third at 422. Rhode Island tied with South Carolina for fourth. Massachusetts, with a team of John Hadges, Brian Higgins and Frank Vana, tied for sixth, at 428. Leopold finished at 212, seventh overall. Brad Valois finished at 221 and Charlie Blanchard, who had a closing 82 after a second-round 69, was at 226 for Rhode Island. Mark Anderson of South Carolina won at 206. |
