The University of New Mexico has taken the early first-round lead in the 16th annual Adams Cup of Newport Invitational Golf Tournament, sponsored by the University of Rhode Island.

The Lobos posted a 287 total in Monday's first round at Newport National. Georgia Southern and SMU are tied for second at 291, while URI is back in 15th place in the 17-team event at 311. Sophomore Taylor Fontaine led URI with a 76. Tiverton's Ben Conway, playing on URI's second, or "Blue Team," had a 72.

Ryan Gay, a freshman from Maine, leads the field with an opening round 68. He is playing as an individual, not part of the Lobo team.

Teams are playing the second round Monday afternoon and will play 18 more Tuesday.
