Were you inspired by Juan Martin del Potro and Kim Clijsters, Roger Federer and the Williams Sisters, or 17-year-old Melanie Oudin at the U.S. Open? Then tune up your serve, work on that backhand and play for a spot at the 2010 Australian Open. The International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport will be the site of a qualifying tournament Sept. 26-27 for the Kia Amateur Australian Open. The event is open to any player over 21 who has not earned a computer point on the ATP or WTA tour. One male and one female from Newport, Phoenix, Chicago and Atlanta will gather in Atlanta Nov. 5-8 for the U.S. semifinals and finals. The winners will represent the U.S. at the KAAO in Melbourne. Kia, an Australian Open sponsor, will cover the travel and lodging expense of the 32 amateurs from 16 nations during the second week of the Open. The qualifying entry fee is $50 for USTA members and $60 for non-members and includes two days of tennis and a player party on Sept. 26. For details, call the Hall of Fame at 401-849-7777 or e-mail mheath@tennisfame.com. |
