NORTON, Mass. _ JIm Furyk and Steve Stricker combined to record 16 birdies Friday _ and no bogeys _ as they tied for the first-round lead in the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC of Boston.

Both players recorded 8-under 63s to lead a day of outstanding scoring. Sixty-four of the 99 starters broke par.

Furyk hit every green in regulation, only the ninth time in his accomplished career he has done so.

One of those who struggled was Tiger Woods.

Playing in the same threesome with Stricker, Woods had a 70 to tie for 48th. Several times in the round he expressed frustration, one time banging his club into the ground and losing control of the club.

Barrington's Brett Quigkey also had 70, thanks to an eagle on the par-5 18th hole.
