Celtics Media Day in Waltham, Mass., was the predictable show of good feeling, with players talking about their determination to win another championship banner and smiles all around.
That was not the case in California's Bay Area, where a couple of malcontents on the Golden State Warriors were using the event basically as a mockery of their franchise, which has made one playoff appearance in the last 14 years.
Stephen Jackson, the talented swingman best known for his gunplay outside a strip club in 2006 -- and for being one of the instigators of the notorious Pacers-Pistons brawl at the Palace of Auburn Hills in 2004 -- called all of the reporters attending the event "vultures," and then proceeded to give them material for a good story as he repeated his desire to no longer play for the Warriors.
And then there was guard Monta Ellis, who welcomed the team's top draft pick, Stephen Curry -- whom he had not met before Media Day -- by saying that the two could never co-exist in the same backcourt.
Here's reporters' exchange with Ellis on the subject of Curry, according to the San Jose Mercury-News:
Question: "Do you envision yourself playing together in the backcourt?"
Ellis: "I can't. I can't answer that. Us together? No."
Q: "Why not?
Ellis: "Huh?"
Q: "Why not?"
Ellis: "Can't."
Q: Why?
Ellis: "Just can't."
Q: "Too small? Too similar?"
Ellis: "Just can't."
Q: (Do) you understand they say you can?
Ellis: "They say we can, but we can't."
Q: You wouldn't want to give it a shot?
Ellis: "I just want to win. That's not going to win that way."
Now there's a positive attitude to start the season.
