BOSTON (AP) -- Actress Cameron Diaz surprised Boston Celtics players and about 125 volunteers when she participated at a project marking the first day of service on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Diaz worked for two hours on Friday with Celtics guard J.R. Giddens, forward Bill Walker, elementary school students and volunteers to build flower beds around a pilot elementary school in the city.

Volunteers also created a basketball court, outdoor classroom, school garden, compost bins and completed other projects at the Young Achievers Science and Mathematics Pilot School in Boston's Mattapan neighborhood.

Diaz was in Boston ahead of filming "The Untitled Wichita Project" with Tom Cruise next week in the central Massachusetts city of Worcester.
