The blog Rumors and Rants recently posted a fascinating list of the best active professional athletes to wear every uniform number from 0 to 99. Click here to see the full list. One lesson of the list is that some numbers are worn by many more good players than others. Another is that we have a lot of good players here in New England (newsflash) -- there are 10 Red Sox or Patriots on the list, which is the same number as all the New York teams combined. Here are the Boston-area athletes who are named as the best at their number. Tough news for the Celtics and the Bruins, though, who were shut out.

Number 12: Tom Brady, Patriots
Number 15: Dustin Pedroia, Red Sox
Number 19: Josh Beckett, Red Sox
Number 46: Paris Lenon, Patriots (this was cited as one of the weakest number of the 100)
Number 48: Tim Wakefield, Red Sox
Number 58: Jonathan Papelbon, Red Sox
Number 67: Dan Koppen, Patriots
Number 81: Randy Moss, Patriots
Number 83: Wes Welker, Patriots
Number 96: Adalius Thomas, Patriots
