PORTSMOUTH -- Jason Hull eagled the par-4 18th hole to shoot 68 and take the first-day lead in the R.I. Golf Association Stroke Play Championship on Monday at Montaup. Hull, from Fenner Hill, had a wild round. He overcame a triple-bogey six on the 10th hole and also had a double bogey on the sixth hole and a bogey on the par-5 16th. He still finished at 3-under because he had seven birdies as well as the eagle. Charlie Blanchard, the defending champion, and Bobby Leopold, the State Amateur champ, both had 69. Two other RIGA champions, Brad Valois and Eugene DiSarro, had 1-under 70s, as did Kyle Hoffman and Kevin McLoughlin. It took a 77 to qualify for Tuesday's finale. -Paul Kenyon |
