PORTSMOUTH -- Charlie Blanchard pulled away in the final round as he successfully defended his title Tuesday in the R.I. Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at Montaup. The lefty from Wannamoisett added rounds of 68 and 69 to his opening 69 on Monday to finish at 7-under 206, six strokes better than Bobby Leopold, the reigning State Amateur titlist. Leopold had rounds of 70 and 73 Tuesday to be the only other player to finish under par, a 1-under 212. Jeff Ray, a recent Barrington High grad who is headed to URI, and West Warwick's Jamie Lukowicz tied for third at 213. Hall of Famer George Pirie and two-time Amateur champion Brad Valois tied for fifth at 215. Pirie won the Senior Division. Valois was the last player to stay with Blanchard. He had a morning 68 to get to 4-under, but struggled to a closing 77, which included an eight on the par-5 13th hole. The title was Blanchard's third overall in the event. -PAUL KENYON |
