Barrington's Matt Broome and Mattapoisett's Peter Uihlein both have advanced to match play in the US Amateur Golf Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Ok. Broome, who plays out of Rhode Island Country Club and is a red-shirt sophomore at Furman, easily advanced. The 2008 New England Amateur champion followed up his opening 69 Monday with a 74 for a 143 total, 3-over-par. That gave him a tie for ninth in the 312-player event. The top 64 qualify for match play. Uihlein, an Oklahoma State star, had a 73 for a 147 total and a tie for 46th. A playoff was held at 148 for the final spots. The three URI grads in the field did not make the cut. Michael Harrington shot 75-77; Brad Valois shot 78-78 and Mark Stevens 75-82. Metacomet's Garrett Medeiros had rounds of 79-77 for 156. Tim Jackson of Tennessee was the medalist, at 140. |
