David Sampson had to work a lot harder for his second Rhode Island Public Links Championship than his first.

Sampson, a Warren resident who plays out of Swansea, successfully defended his Publinx title Monday by shooting a 71 at Cranston Country Club for a 36-hole total of 145. That gave him a one-stroke victory over Robert Glass III, who had a second-round 74 for 146. Jason Hull was third at 147.

Sampson, who was one of the top players on the Seton Hall team this season, won the tournament by seven shots last year. This time, a birdie on the par-5 17th proved to be the difference.

In the women's division, Judy Gravier edged Linda DaRosa by one shot, 174-175. Gravier had a second-round 87, DaRosa an 85.
