NEWPORT -- Unseeded Rajeev Ram, ranked No. 181 on the ATP World Tour, upset third-seeded Sam Querrey, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3 ,in the singles final of the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships Sunday at the Newport Casino. Querrey is ranked No. 39. The title is the first on the ATP circuit for the 25-year-old from Carmel, Ind. He is the 15th player in tournament history to win for the first time and is the first lucky loser in tournament history to go all the way. He got into the main draw on Monday when top-seeded Mardy Fish withdrew to join the U.S. Davis Cup team in Croatia. Ram is the lowest ranked player to win a championship on the ATP World Tour this year. Ram won the decisive third set when he broke Querrey's serve in the eighth game with a beautiful cross-court volley for a winner. He held serve in the ninth game for the victory. Ram and Querrey exchange powerful ground strokes for most of the first two sets, but in the 12th game of the second set Ram broke Querrey's serve by attacking and continued that strategy throughout the third set. Ram earned $79,000 for his triumph. Querrey collected $41,500. The match lasted 2 hours and 1 minute. |
