According to multiple media reports today, future Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez will take a physical for the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday and could sign with the team by Wednesday.

The reports indicate that the Phillies are hoping Martinez will be ready to take the mound in the big leagues by the start of August. With one of the league's most potent lineups, the defending champion Phillies are desperate for quality starting pitching, and they sent representatives to scout Martinez this month. He is expected to make short money -- less than a prorated portion of the $5 million he had been seeking -- and will begin his climb back to the majors with a minor-league rehab assignment.

Martinez has not pitched in the majors since last season, when he had an ineffective season with the Mets. According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports, Martinez reached 88 to 89 miles an hour with his fastball in his workout for the Phillies, and impressed the scouts with his command.
