Metacomet's Garrett Medeiros capped a great day with an eagle on the final hole to record a 6-under 65 Monday and take the early lead in the 104th Rhode Island Golf Association Amateur Championship at Crestwood.
Medeiros, a former RIGA Junior champion who just completed his junior year at Wofford College, had four birdies, including three in a row beginning at the 13th hole. He then reached the par-5 18th with a drive and 5-iron and made a five-footer for eagle and his 65. Medeiros already has comined with Robert Marshalewski to win the RIGA Four-Ball title this summer.
With half the field still on the course, Bill McDonald, one of the stars of the URI golf team, was the only other player under par, with a 69.
Dan Blessing of Wannamoisett is third with a 71.
David McAndrew, the defending champion, had a 73.
