By PAUL KENYON SOUTH KINGSTOWN -- Jimmy Baron officially is a professional basketball player. The URI grad reported Tuesday that he has signed a contract to play in a league in Turkey. He will play in the city of Mercin, in Class A, the top level league in that country. "I'm happy,'' Baron said. "It's a good situation. If you thought we (at URI) ran, they run even more.'' Baron will be replacing former Tennessee guard Chris Lofton on the roster on the Mercin roster. "Chris had one game last year where he made 17 threes in 22 attepmts and another when he went 13 for 20,'' Baron said. "They are expecting me to come in and shoot the lights out. That's fine with me.'' Baron played in the Orlando Pro Summer League earlier this month and then also worked with Washington, although he did not play in the NBA Summer League games with the Wizards. Scouts saw him there and a pre-draft workouts. "They contacted B.J. Armstrong, my agent,'' Baron said. "They saw me play and showed a lot of interest. Plus my father (URI coach Jim Baron) also has connections over there.'' Baron would not say how much money he will be paid, but he did say it is a one-year contract. "The money is terrific. I'm not going to go into details, but it is pretty high up, about as high as it can be for a first-year player,'' he said. "They have set me up with a three-bedroom apartment. They pay for a car. Basically, I pay for just the utilities and gas.'' Baron will leave Aug. 10. The season is made up of 45 games, with one or two games per week and two-a-day practices. The playoffs are in April. |
