NEWPORT -- Taylor Dent, once part of a group of young Americans on the pro tennis tour that included Andy Roddick, James Blake, Mardy Fish and Robby Ginepri, returned to the site of his first ATP tournament championship and won his first-round match Monday in the $500,000 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships.

Dent, the 2002 winner, defeated Marcos Daniel of Brazil, 6-2, 6-1, at the Newport Casino. He could face two-time defending champion Fabrice Santoro of France in the second round.

Ranked as high as No. 21 in 2005, Dent is No. 235 on the ATP World Tour and is trying to rebound from several injuries the last three years.

American Brendan Evans upset fourth-seeded Benjamin Becker of Germany, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-5, and German Daniel Brands of Germany defeated American Vince Spadea, 6-0, 6-4.
