Players and fans are millng about the Newport Casino waiting for the start of the day's 20-match schedule at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. Officials delayed play until at least 1 o'clock. Play was supposed to have begun on two Front Lawn courts at 10:30, a third Front Lawn court at 10:45 and on the Stadium Court at 11.

The grass within the lines, covered by tarps during downpours the last two days, appears dry enough to provide stable footing, but the area behind the baselines, which remained uncovered, continue to challenge the grounds crew. They are using blowers to work on the south baseline in the stadium.

Rain has caused postponements in the past, but first-round matches being delayed to Thursday is unusual. Three first-round matches have been suspended and three yet to begin. The schedule today includes those six plus six second-round matches. Eight doubles matches are also on the schedule.

The weather here is overcast with patches of blue sky and occasional glimpses of the sun.The temperature is about 70 degrees, and there is a faint breeze.
