As so often seems to happen in the Rhode Island Amateur golf championship, players from Rhode Island Country Club are leading the way. Two youngsters who learned the game at RICC, Matt Broome and Eddie Hjerpe, are the co-leaders midway through the second and final day of qualifying at Crestwood. Both are in at 3-under 139. Broome, who plays for Furman, had a 68 Tuesday. Hjerpe, the R.I. Interscholastic League champion who will begin school at Notre Dame in the fall, had a 70. A number of the first-round leaders, including Metacomet's Garrett Medeiros, who opened with a 65, and defending champion David McAndrew, another of the RICC stars, are still on the course. With another sunny, warm day, the course is firming up, especially on the greens, making for generally higher scores on the second day. The cut looks to be at about 149 or 150. If it is, it would claim a major victim. Charlie Blanchard, a five-time RIGA player of the year and the best player in the state over the last decade, is at 151 after a second-round 78. Two other former champions, George Pirie and Mike Soucy, are on the bubble at 150.
