BY PAUL KENYON Brett Quigley qualified for the British Open, but don't look for his name when the championship starts Thursday. Rather than being at Turnberry in Scotland, Quigley is in Milwaukee to play in the PGA Tour's U.S. Bank Championship. Quigley was the last player to earn a spot at Turnberry. His tie for second at the John Deere Classic on Sunday made him the highest finisher not already qualified for the British, so he became the recipient of the last-minute invitation. The problem was that Quigley would have had to leave immediately Sunday to join a charter flight with other players headed to Scotland. He was not ready to do so. "It's a tough decision to make. I know I'll catch some heat for it," Quigley said. "But I know it's the right decision for me." Among other problems, the Barrington native did not have his passport. It was at his home in Florida. Also, he had planned to attend (and did) the funeral for Beth Smith, the wife of fellow PGA Tour player Chris Smith on Tuesday. "There's a million reasons to go. I just feel like it's going to be better for me to go to Milwaukee and be with my family," he said. "It sounds crazy just talking about it . . . I know if I heard another player say it, I would be like, 'How can you not go to the British?' It's just not for me." |
