CRANSTON _ The numbers Garrett Medeiros posted Monday in U.S. Amateur qualifying were not as spectacular as those he put up in R.I. Amateur qualifying two weeks ago, but they were plenty good enough to earn him a trip to Oklahoma.

The St. Raphael grad and current Wofford College star who plays out of Metacomet posted rounds of 72-69 at Cranston Country Club. His 141 total led a 48-player field and earned him one of the two available spots in next month's U.S. Amateur at Southern Hills.

The second spot went to two-time state champion Brad Valois, who beat new state champion Bobby Leopold in a playoff after both finished at 143.

Valois and Leopold both birdied the first playoff hole. Valois, who also qualified for the U.S. Am last year, won when he also birdied the second. Charlie Blanchard finished at 144. He is the second alternate.

Medeiros won medalist honors by 10 strokes at the R.I. Am at Crestwood with a 13-under 129. Last week, he finished second in the New England Amateur in Portsmouth, N.H. Monday, he finished strongly, with a 2-under 33 over his final nine, to come out of a tightly bunched field and earn a spot in Tulsa. Mederios clinched his spot with a birdie on his 36th hole.
