Jodi McKenna, a Warwick native and 1998 Brown grad, has been named an assistant coach for the 2010 U.S. Women's Olympic hockey team. McKenna has been the head coach at Wesleyan for the last two years after being an assistant at St. Lawrence University for nine years. As a player at Brown, McKenna helped the Bears win an ECAC regular-season or tournament title three times. She played both forward and defense as her team won an Ivy League title, the ECAC playoffs and placed second in the first-ever women's national championship. She has been involved with USA Hockey Player Development Camps and was an assistant coach at USA Hockey's Women's Under-22 Camp last summer and at the USA Hockey Women's Holiday Camp in December. This summer, she will serve as the on-ice director for the USA Hockey Girls' Select 14 Player Development Camp. Former men's Olympian Mark Johnson is the head coach of the women's team that will play in Vancouver next year. The other assistant named with McKenna is Dave Flint, head women's coach at Northeastern University. "We're extremely excited to have both Dave Flint and Jodi McKenna join our coaching staff," said Michele Amidon, director of women's hockey for USA Hockey. "They bring a wealth of experience, both with Team USA and their college programs." In addition to her coaching, McKenna also is a certified strength and conditioning coach. Her appointment means both U.S. hockey staffs in the Olympics will have a Rhode Island flavor. East Providence's Ron Wilson is the head coach of the men's team, and PC grad Brian Burke is the general manager. Former Providence Bruins coaches Scott Gordon and Peter Laviolette are believed to be top candidates to assist Wilson. |
