Forbes.com has released its list of the world's 20 highest-paid athletes, and the most popular sports league in the world's wealthiest country does not have a single representative on the list. The National Football League, which Forbes says is the world's wealthiest sports league, has a salary cap and few individual players who make big money through endorsements, which are included in the way Forbes measures total compensation. The highest-paid football player over the last 12 months was, according to Forbes, Oakland defensive back Nnamdi Asomugha, who made $22 million mostly because of the fact that he signed a three-year, $45-million contract in February. Topping the list was golfer Tiger Woods -- he was far, far ahead of everybody, with $110 million in earnings over the past 12 months. New England had one representative on the top 20 list -- Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, whose $30 million take tied him for 17th with NASCAR's Jeff Gordon, the New York Yankees' Derek Jeter and Brazilian soccer star Ronaldhino. |
