Ryan Leaf, the former star quarterback who went on to become the most notorious draft bust in NFL history, is wanted by law-enforcement officials in Texas after failing to turn himself in on drug and burglary charges.

The 33-year-old Leaf is accused -- among other things -- of breaking into an apartment in Canyon, Texas, in October and stealing an unknown quantity of the painkiller Hydrocodone, known by the brand name Vicodin. The painkiller had been prescribed to an injured player living there, according to the police.

A grand jury has issued nine indictments against Leaf, and a warrant for his arrest was issued on May 20.

Leaf was taken by the San Diego Chargers in 1998 with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft -- right after the Indianapolis Colts selected future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. But while Manning went on to a tremendous career, Leaf was ineffective on the field and frequently clashed with critics off the field. His name tends to be repeated endlessly as a cautionary tale before every NFL Draft.
