What would summers be like without Brett Favre? It was another bizarre day in the continuing saga of the future Hall of Fame quarterback, as ESPN reported that the Minnesota Vikings have set an end-of-the-week deadline for Favre to decide if he wants to return to play for them next year. ESPN quoted two unnamed sources. Later in the day, though, Pat Kirwan, an NFL.com columnist and Sirius Radio co-host who is friends with Vikings coach Brad Childress, dismissed the ESPN story entirely, saying it was completely manufactured: "Let me make sure I'm clear on this to everyone who is listening," Kirwan said on the "Movin' The Chains" program. "There is no deadline for Brett Favre to come in by Friday. There is zero deadline. The story was made up, it's not true and trust me on that." Chris Mortensen on Monday night's edition of SportsCenter was standing by his deadline story, although he did allow that "Could it be a soft deadline ... maybe." I tend to think Kirwan has to be correct on this: There's no way we're going to know what Brett is going to do in June. Talk to me in August. |
