WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The Westerly High School boys' distance medley team ran the fastest time in the United States this outdoor track season Thursday at the annual Glenn Loucks Games in White Plains, N.Y.

The Bulldogs combined winning time of 10:01.87 is a New England record and the 14th fastest time ever recorded by a U.S. high school team.

Senior Andrew Springer, who will run at Georgetown University and is the nation's top miler, legged out the final 1600 meters in 4:03.5 as Westerly edged a relay team from Albermale, Va.

Senior Tim O'Loughlin, who will run at the University of Florida next year, ran the 1200 meter leadoff leg in 3:07.1, followed by Alex Phelps's 50.9 in the 400. The third leg was John DiGangi who clocked a 1:59.5 for 800 meters before Springer grabbed the baton.

Springer trailed Tyler Stutzman, a top national miler for Western Abermale, by 25 yards when he started the final leg. Stutzman ran the final leg in 4:07.

Springer is scheduled to run the mile and two-mile on Saturday at the Hartford Public Invitational in New Britain, Conn.
