SMITHFIELD -- Major League Baseball is not immune from the global recession, according to Boston Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino. Major League Baseball, as an industry, "is not recession-proof," Lucchino told the Providence Journal in an interview following graduation ceremonies at Bryant University in Smithfield, where Lucchino delivered the commencement address. "We, however, are lucky," thanks to a deep fan base and strong support from baseball fans and businesses in New England, he said. Going into this season, the Red Sox franchise had a streak of 469 consecutive sell-out games, he said. So far this season, the team has sold out all of its home games for April and May, he said. Lucchino said he was honored to receive a degree from Bryant, and added, "I love Rhode Island . . . . I tell everyone it's America's best-kept secret." He called Rhode Island "one of the foundations of Red Sox Nation," adding that he appreciates the loyalty and passion of Rhode Island's Red Sox fans. A Webcast of the graduation ceremony, including Lucchino's address, is available through the "View Ceremony" link on the Bryant University Web site. |
