Police in Massachusetts have used the state's Criminal Offender Record Information system to improperly access the personal information of celebrities and professional athletes, according to a state auditor's report. The report said, among other things, that police in multiple communities had improperly accessed personal information of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady nearly 1,000 times -- looking up his driver's license photo, home address and whether he had ever purchased a gun, among other things -- and had also done queries on Celtics star Paul Pierce and Red Sox owner John Henry, among others.

The CORI system is a massive database of driving records, criminal histories, Social Security numbers and other bits of information intended to provide authorities information about people who are arrested or otherwise brought into the court system; sometimes it can be used by employers and landlords to conduct background checks. But, according to The Boston Globe, the auditor's report claims it is often used by law enforcement "without any apparent work-related justification," something that can be considered fraud under federal law.
