| Sox weathering recession so far, Lucchino says »
SMITHFIELD -- Pawtucket Red Sox pitchers Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden can expect to get called up to the majors at some point this season, said Boston Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino. Lucchino said that if there's one thing he's learned in his 30 years in baseball, it's that you never have enough pitching. The Red Sox are fortunate in that regard, he said. "We have a lot of depth in pitching," Lucchino said. Asked if Buchholz and Bowden can expect to be called up at some point this year, Lucchino nodded his head affirmatively. "They're helping Pawtucket win. They will help [the Boston] Red Sox win. . . . We're lucky to have that kind of depth." Lucchino's comments came in an interview with the Providence Journal during graduation-day ceremonies at Bryant University in Smithfield, where he received an honorary degree. So far this season, Buchholz has a record of 2-0 and a 1.03 earned run average. -- NEIL DOWNING |
