Baird selected to another Hall of Fame

Bill Baird, the former athletic director at Rhode Island College and Roger Williams University, has been selected for induction into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Baird will be honored at the association's 44th annual convention June19th in Orlando, Fla.

The others being honored are bob Burns of John Brown University; Jim Copeland of Southern Methodist University; Barbara Hedges of the University of Washington; Bobby May of Rice; Orby Moss of Georgia State; Phil Roach of Rollins College, and Bill Rowe of Missouri State.

Baird was director of athletics at RIC from 1965-76 and also was the head basketball coach at the school. In basketball, his teams captured four division championships.

While he was athletic director titles won by his school include included two tennis New England State College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) championships. In addition, Baird was responsible for leading RIC athletics fundraising efforts through the Anchor Fund.

After his tenure at RIC, Baird became the AD at Roger Williams University in 1993. In 2000-01, his final year as athletics director at Roger Williams, four Hawk teams captured championships, 10 sports posted winning seasons and four coaches won Coach-of-the-Year Honors.

Baird was a member of many national associations and served as officer of various conferences over the course of his tenure, including President of the NESCAC and district chairman for the NAIA. He was also the NCAA Division III regional tournament director in 1975-76. He served on NACDA's executive committee.

A former basketball player at URI (1950-53), Baird has been inducted into the URI Hall of Fame and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
