North Kingstown senior quarterback Dave D'Errico was named recipient of the Providence Gridiron Club's Gilbane Award as the 2008 Rhode Island high school football Player of the Year. The award, which is named in honor of the late Brown University football All-Americans Tom and Bill Gilbane, was presented Wednesday night at the Gridiron Club's annual spring awards dinner. D'Errico was the Division I scoring leader last fall with 180 points on 29 touchdowns and three conversion rushes. He ran for 2,078 yards and passed for 1,028 yards in 12 games. Hope High coach Mike Gibbons; Barrington lineman Sam Chrupcala and Toll Gate running back Doug Johnson were named the Coach, Lineman and Back of the Year respectively. The divisional Lineman of the Year award recipients were Chrupcala in Division I; Westerly's Mike Intieri in Division II-A; Tim Hazard of South Kingstown in II-B; Central's William Rivera in Division III and Hope's Shea Deignan in Division IV. D'Errico also was the recipient of the Division I Back of the Year award and Johnson was the Division II-B recipient. Warwick Vets quarterback Bob Bentsen was the Division II-A Back of the Year; Johnston's Brandon Parillo captured the Division III award and Exeter-West Greenwich's Zack Hornoff was the Division IV outstanding back. Former Johnston High coach Tony Centore was named recipient of the Larry Gallogly Humanitarian Award. |
