The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team broke a 72-72 tie by scoring the final 10 points of the game to defeat Baruch College of New York, 82-72, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Harrington Auditorium on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute Friday evening. The Bearcats' Stephen Bader had just tied the score at 72-72 with a lay-up when he was whistled for his fifth and final foul with 2:32 remaining. Sophomore forward Brandon Shelton hit a pair of free throws to give the Corsairs the lead for good. Walker led UMD with 19 points and seven rebounds, junior forward Brandon Shelton added 15 points, Stephens added 14, and Freeman had 10 points, four steals and six assists. Macchi also had four steals as the Corsairs forced 25 turnovers while committing 15. The Corsairs will play WPI in the regional championship game Saturday evening. |
