sheffield0331.jpgThe Detroit Tigers this morning released nine-time All-Star Gary Sheffield, who is one home run away from 500 for his career, but who struggled last season and has hit under .200 so far this spring.

The Tigers will eat all $14 million of the money they owe the 40-year-old Sheffield in the final year of the contract extension that the club gave Sheffield after acquiring him in a trade with the Yankees.

Sheffield was a huge disappointment with the Tigers (.225, 19 home runs last season), in large part because of injuries. His arrival in Detroit came after a fairly ugly breakup with the Yankees, who picked up an option year on his contract following the 2006 season in order to prevent him from becoming a free agent. Sheffield had expressed interest in joining the Red Sox.

Last year, the Tigers put Sheffield on waivers late in the season, but there were no takers. We can expect that he won't be out of work long.
