Jay Jeannotte, of Narragansett High School, has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Rhode Island Boys Basketball Player of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. Jeannotte is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.
The 6-foot-2 senior shooting guard led the Mariners to a 24-2 record and a runner-up finish in the Division II state tournament this season. Jeannotte averaged 22.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Narragansett won five games this season by one or two points, and Jeannotte, a member of the 2008 Academic All-State Team, hit the game-winning shot in the final seconds of all five games. Jeannotte has maintained an A average in the classroom and ranks third in his class of 116 students. A peer math tutor, he won the Math and Science Achievement Medal at Narragansett High as a junior. Jeannotte has volunteered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and at local basketball camps and clinics.
