cutler0311.jpgNew Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels tried to mend fences with angry quarterback Jay Cutler in a conference call on Monday, but ESPN is quoting an anonymous "source close to the situation" as saying that the call resulted in things going from bad to worse.

Cutler, who was infuriated by reports that the team tried to trade him in a multi-team deal that would have brought Matt Cassel to the Mile High City, was reportedly further irritated on Monday by the suggestion of Broncos brass that Cutler had created the tensions by taking his anger public. McDaniels has maintained that he was not looking to move Cutler out to make way for his former pupil, Cassel, but said that he was approached about a deal.

The ESPN source said that during the conference call with Cutler, McDaniels would not confirm whether the Broncos had been the initiators of the trade talks. The source went on to say that Cutler was informed that any player on the team could be traded at any time, and added that Cutler would prefer to be traded now if the team is not willing to commit to him in the long term.

Of course, this being an ESPN story, there was a second anonymous source -- this one close to the team -- giving a totally different account of the conversation, saying the team emphasized to Cutler that it was not going to trade him and that the sides did not grow any farther apart as a result of the conference call.
