BOSTON -- The Celtics got off to a sluggish start and trailed 11-2 after a Rasheed Wallace 3-pointer 3:34 into the game.

But instead of calling a timeout, Rivers decided to let his players play through the dry spell. It worked. By the end of the first quarter it was Boston that was up, 22-20, thanks to a great defensive effort throughout the rest of the quarter, and nine points from Pierce.

New additions Stephon Marbury and Mikki Moore found themselves playing extended minutes with Boston's second unit to start the second quarter, and while Marbury struggled to guard the much bigger Walter Herrmann (11 points), who posted up Marbury at will, Moore played so well that he remained on the floor in favor of Glen Davis when Boston's starters returned to the court.

The second units from each team played a nip-and-tuck affair with neither team able to establish themselves over the other. Detroit's starters had the edge over Boston's starters when they returned to the court, however. The first half ended with a Detroit leading, 55-47. The Pistons closed out the first half with a 14-3 run.

Pierce leads the Celtics with 13 points while Leon Powe has nine points and five rebounds off of the bench. Kendrick Perkins, Ray Allen, and Rajon Rondo each have six points.

Rodney Stuckey (9 points) Antonio McDyess (8 points), Richard Hamilton (7 points, 5 assists), and Will Bynum (7 points) have also played well for Detroit
