By DANIEL BARBARISI FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Chris Carter has won the competition for the last roster spot over Jeff Bailey, barring an unforeseen acquisition by the Red Sox. Carter should serve as a backup first baseman/corner outfielder until the return of Mark Kotsay, set for May 1. Carter has had an excellent spring, batting .359 with six home runs and 10 RBI. He will travel with the team to Bradenton tomorrow to play the Pirates, and then will join them in New York this weekend. Bailey will go back to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he has spent most of the last five seasons. He too had a good spring, hitting .356 with one home run and eight RBI, and walking enough to compile a .455 on-base percentage. |
