pedro0318.jpgHouston Astros general manager Ed Wade yesterday insisted that the team has had "zero conversations" with Pedro Martinez, disputing a report in Baseball Prospectus that the Astros were on the verge of signing the future Hall of Famer. Houston this week has already signed catcher Ivan Rodriguez, the free agent who excelled for the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic.

Martinez pitched well in a limited relief role for the ill-fated Dominican Republic team in the WBC, but he remains unemployed amid concerns about his unsuccessful 2008 season. The Astros are, nonetheless, holding a news conference this morning to make an "important announcement," but Wade says that Martinez's name won't come up.
