At a time when many owners are thought to be reluctant to sign players to big, long-term contracts, Washington today has signed All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a seven-year, $100-million deal. Haynesworth's deal came just hours after the Redskins announced that they had re-signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall for six years and $54 million, including $22.5 million in guaranteed money. The addition of Haynesworth, a 6-6, 320-pound monster who had 8 1/2 sacks last year, could turn a very good Washington defense (the second-best in the NFC last season) into a great one. It will do nothing, though, to help an offense that finished 28th in the NFL in total points last season. The Redskins and the Cowboys are two of the four NFC teams that have not qualified for a single conference championship game this decade. Since Snyder took over the Redskins before the 1999 season, the team has made a lot of high-profile moves while compiling a 76-84 record and making the playoffs just three times in 10 seasons. In that time, the Redskins have won just two postseason games. |
