Defending International Bowl winner Connecticut, Ivy League champion Brown and NCAA Championship participants Maine, New Hampshire and Villanova highlight the 2009 University of Rhode Island football schedule, which was announced today.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Darren Rizzi, the Rams open the 2009 campaign at home on Sept. 5 when they play host to Fordham. URI's game against Fordham will be its only game at home throughout the month of September.
Following its bye week on Sept. 12, Rhody opens Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) competition on Sept. 19 as it heads to Massachusetts for the first time since the 2006 season. Last season, UMass finished the year by receiving votes in both FCS polls (Coaches and Sports Network).
On Sept. 26, URI heads to Connecticut for the 92nd meeting between the two teams. In 2008, UConn went 7-5 and finished the year with a 38-20 victory over Buffalo in the International Bowl.
Following its matchup with the Huskies, Rhody heads North to take on in-state rival and 2008 Ivy League Champion Brown on Oct. 3 in Providence. The game will also serve as the 28th Annual Governor's Cup. The Rams have won the last three meetings with the Bears.
The next week, URI returns to Kingston for a pair of home games against Towson (Oct. 10) and Hofstra (Oct. 17). Last season, the Rams fell to both Towson (37-32) and Hofstra (23-20) by a combined eight points.
After its matchup with Hofstra, Rhody heads to Philadelphia to take on NCAA Championship participant Villanova (Oct. 24) before returning home on Oct. 31 to take on William and Mary.
Two of Rhody's final three games place the Rams on the road against New Hampshire (Nov. 7) and Maine (Nov. 14). Last season both teams participated in the 2008 NCAA Championship. UNH advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Rhode Island closes out the 2009 campaign at home against Northeastern. In 2008, URI downed NU 29-14.
