ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre will inform the New York Jets today of his plan to retire. Just 11 months ago, Favre gave a tearful speech announcing his retirement from football; his decision to reconsider touched off a battle with his longtime team, the Green Bay Packers, that resulted in Favre finishing his career (apparently) with the Jets. Favre, who will turn 40 later this year, told ESPN's Ed Werder by e-mail that he had no regrets that he did not finish his career with the Packers. The Jets, after a promising start that had some fans talking about a Super Bowl appearance, flopped down the stretch and missed the playoffs. Favre uncorked nine interceptions and just two touchdowns in the final five games of the season (the Jets went 1-4 in those games). The Jets will now have to decide their plans at quarterback, but they will have lots of extra spending money to help make things work. Favre's decision to retire will save the team $13 million in salary cap space.
