The possibility quarterback Kurt Warner will retire and the Arizona Cardinals' inconsistent play last season place the team among the longer shots to win the 2010 Super Bowl, according to an Internet bookmaker.
Seventeen of the National Football League's 32 teams are favored over the Cardinals to win next season's championship. Arizona led last night's title game until the final 35 seconds before falling 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"The uncertainty surrounding Kurt Warner going into the offseason has a decisive impact on the Cardinals' odds for next season,'' Richard Gardner, who manages the Internet sports book Bodog, said in an e-mail.
The Cardinals have 30-1 odds to become just the second team to follow a Super Bowl defeat with a win in the championship at Bodog, an Antigua-based Internet sports book that cannot legally accept U.S. bets. The Dallas Cowboys accomplished the feat 37 years ago, following a 16-13 loss to the Baltimore Colts in the 1971 Super Bowl with a 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins the next season.
The Steelers have 10-1 odds to repeat, tied for the third- lowest with the New York Giants. The New England Patriots, with 8-1 odds, are favored, followed by the Dallas Cowboys (9-1).
If the Steelers become the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the Patriots in 2005, a $100 bet on Pittsburgh would yield $1,000 profit.
