Stephon Marbury has expressed interest in joining the Celtics for several months, and many of Boston's players have gone on record to say that they would welcome him with open arms.

Now, it seems, it may only be only a matter of time before Marbury puts on a Celtics uniform. That could happen as early as Friday.

The Knicks and Marbury agreed on a buyout of the guard's contract Tuesday afternoon and those in the know say that after Marbury clears waivers and becomes a free agent, he will join the Celtics.

Marbury is expected to be waived Wednesday morning and clear waivers on Friday.

"A comprehensive agreement was made this afternoon between the New York Knicks and Stephon Marbury," the Knicks said in a statement. "Under its terms, the grievance has been resolved and the Knicks have requested waivers on Stephon. No additional terms will be disclosed."

It is believed that Marbury will take home $4.5 million of the $6.4 million left on his $20.8-million salary this season.

Marbury hasn't played an NBA regular-season game since Jan. 11 of last season. He averaged 19.7 points and 7.8 assists per game last season.

Boston guard Rajon Rondo recently told reporters that he thinks Marbury would help the Celtics.

"People may think it's a bad idea, but I kind of think it'll help us," Rondo said.

Boston forward Kevin Garnett, who played with Marbury when the two were in Minnesota together, said that he would welcome Marbury as well.

"I think it's about making the team better," Garnett said after the Knicks beat the Celtics on Jan. 4. "I'm not opposed to Steph. I feel like he's got a lot of basketball left in him. I know his IQ is very, very high. He is one of the best point guards out there. I wouldn't be opposed to it.

"If anybody came to this team and made it better, I would be all for that," Garnett added.
